September 2021 Recs

Wow, it's been awhile since I've done a recs post.

And it’s way overdue. I’m waaaay behind but slowly catching up with my reading, so here are few delectable tidbits from the past few months. More to come!

Author: arcticcat621
Rating: G
Word Count: 303
Characters: Severus Snape/Minerva McGonagall
Summary: Severus encourages Minerva to take a small break.

Why You Should Read It:

This was a gift for me during the Rarepair_Shorts Summer Wishlist Event, and it was the perfect little hug of comfort during what was a difficult summer for many.

In this very short piece, the author not only shows us that Minerva and Severus care for one another, but somehow also manages to include the humor and teasing I enjoy so much in this ship.

Author: sirmioneforever
Rating: PG
Word Count: 480
Characters: Minerva McGonagall/Elphinstone Urquart
Summary: Minerva finds peace and happiness after finally accepting his proposal.

Why You Should Read It:

Another lovely gift for me from the Rarepair_Shorts fest, this one by sirmioneforever, this short piece gives us a Minerva who is slightly bewildered by events. It’s so much fun to see uber-rational Minerva McGonagall a bit blindsided by feelings she never expected to have, and it’s all very sweet without being too fluffy.

Author: eldritcher
Rating: R
Word Count: 1,500
Characters: Ollivander/Minerva McGonagall; Severus Snape
Summary: Ollivander finds himself in the crosshairs of an inept cupid.

Why You Should Read It:

And yet another wonderful gift for meeeee!

In this fic, the author’s evocative language and poetry allusions add layers to the story that enriches the short form immeasurably.

The often hard-to-pull-off second-person POV works so well because of the story’s overall tone of surprise and the POV character’s journey of learning about himself. Since we, the readers, don’t know Ollivander very well, it’s a wonderful way to introduce him.

The unexpected friendship between Ollivander and Snape is perfect, showing us two introspective, secretive men with inquisitive minds. And the backstory the author gives is heartbreaking.

Author: tea_for_lupin
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 838
Characters: Minerva McGonagall/Irma Pince
Summary: Minerva’s hat is crooked; Irma/Poppy reaches to fix it and finds herself awfully close.

Why You Should Read It:

Written to a prompt from cranky_crocus, this fic is a brilliant little moment that’s sweet, funny, sexy, and all-around perfect.

Author: eldritcher
Rating: R
Word Count: 1,300
Characters: Rosmerta/Severus Snape
Summary: In which Rosmerta contemplates the nature of swans.

Why You Should Read It:

This gorgeous fic slides between the pages of canon and tells us so much about these two characters, one about whom we don’t know much and one (we think) we do.

Rosmerta here is very observant, and her musing on her place in the world and Severus’s are both heartbreaking and real.

Eldritcher’s prose is poetry, and their use of classical and literary allusions add depth to this short fic.

Author: eldritcher
Rating: R
Word Count: 5,000
Characters: Severus Snape/Aberforth Dumbledore; Charity Burbage, Harry Potter
Summary: Snape sabotages The Plan.

Why You Should Read It:

Yet another wonderful piece by eldritcher (they’ve been busy!), this one written for consistentsquash, this is a gorgeous, painful story of beautiful, ruined people.

I love the way the story subverts canon (and Albus’s plans), and every line oozes with delicious obervations, particularly when Snape contemplates his Dark Lord.

The author once again uses second-person POV here, and it works because this Severus is such an unsparing observer of everyone, but especially of himself.

Author: pangaeaseas
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,180
Characters: Minerva McGonagall/Poppy Pomfrey
Summary: After the battle, Minerva and Poppy reunite.

Why You Should Read It:

In this lovely, moving little story, pangaeaseas captures a perfect post-battle moment that is tender, joyous, and heartbreaking all at once.
