Severus and Albus are swiftly approaching the final act. Time is taking its toll on Albus, and Severus insists that they take an evening away to reflect. Sentimental twaddle ensues, because, of course it does - but this time, it has some...literary merit, perhaps?
Sentimental? Maybe a bit. Twaddle? Definitely not. This brief piece is a powerful and painful exploration of the relationship between Albus and Severus during the last year of Albus’s life. It’s unusual to see such intimate and tender moments between these two, but it works here because the author doesn’t shy away from the ugliness or the discomfort of their positions, giving us a bittersweet glimpse of what it might have been like if the Dark Lord hadn’t risen again.
