Pomona has always loved Minerva and until Elph, she was happy to love from a distance.
This is an economical, evocative tale of undying, unrequited, and (it's hinted) ultimately destructive love, and offers some lovely insights into both Pomona's mind and Minerva's. Or at least, one thinks it's a glimpse into Minerva's mind; Pomona has clearly made a lifetime study of Minerva, but by the time the story takes place, she herself may be a bit deranged by jealousy.
