Two former lovers have dinner on a wartime Christmas Eve.
What a sucker I am for a tale of first love rekindled! I adore both these characters to bits, and to see them paired up is an unexpected delight. The seduction scene is perfect--each of them with their insecurities and their baggage--the way Pomona handles it is just as I'd imagine she would: with kindness and humor and pragmatism. I love how the author tempers some of the story's inherent sadness: the cycle of life continues, and who would know that better than Pomona?
