Amelia Bones is one of my favorite pairings for Minerva because, although she’s only vaguely sketched out in canon, what we know of her fits well with the Minerva McGonagall I have in my head.
Like Minerva, she’s a respected professional in a highish-profile position—one which might make being an out lesbian or bisexual difficult, depending on the version of wizarding society one envisions. Her dediction to fairness and to the anti-Voldemort cause would appeal to Minerva (and vice-versa).
The potential for romance, trooubled or smooth, between them is intriguing, and these works exploit it magnificently.
It takes sixty years, but Minerva finally comes to understand the truth of George Bernard Shaw's pronouncement on tragedy: "Life contains but two tragedies. One is not to get your heart's desire; the other is to get it."
